orchard

i finally moved the orchard outdoors...i've had them in pots in the livingroom window, hardeneing them off to direct sunlight for part of the day for a month or so and i thought they were ready ( they were also becoming pot-bound )...so i found the sunniest part of the back yard ( just west of all the ornamental grasses )...i skimmed of the sod ( to the compost heap ) loosened the soil, added some compost...liberally watered...and planted the trees about ten feet apart ...so the process i started last november has seen the attrition of quite a few trees ( how many seeds get to become trees? ) has moved to a more natural phase..if the trees thrive in their new location i may have to transplant one to provide a bit more growing room...if not then we will do more research and try again ( although with the number of apple tres around these parts i can't see why they wouldn't, given proper care )...another move towards a bit more self-sufficiency going on in my back yard...this is food as local as i can make it.
