spinach seeds

some soul searching the web for information about spinach going to seed ended up at this blog because i had mentioned in the text that i was letting the spinach on campus go to seed and that it would be ready to bring in soon...but i neglected to provide any illustrations...so...in case that intrepid surfer is still coming back to this, or if anyone else is interested, here goes...i went to campus this evening on a maintenance trip and sure enough the spinach in the top photo was ready to take out...you can see that the seeds are clustered lower down on the branches and become sparser as the move toward the tip...the second photo is of some single and some clustered seeds...the seed clusters are quite dry but did not shatter readily...in fact even the single seeds were not in a hurry to detach themselves...signs of a domesticated plant i think...the third photo is of some gamagrass seeds that did shatter readily...i only retrieved four seeds from the first seed head but caught the second and third at just the right time to collect them...the bottom half of those seed heads are still green ( you can see some green in the seeds in my hand) so i will be checking them every time i go back over the next few weeks...and while we're talking gamagrass the last photo is of the runt bunch that was overshadowed by the outlying jerusalem atichokes last year ( they're still looming in the background...just nowhere near as close ) it has come along well this season and soon will be rivaling the two larger bunches in size...so far so good..soon rutabagas go in and spring wheat comes out...then we can hope the teosinte does something extraordinary.

  1. Considering your interest in old time crops, and organic systems... I think you might like the landrace idea, and you would probably fit right in with some of us over at the Homegrown Goodness plant forum.
