early june

one cycle coming to a close...another beginning...acorn squash in the top photo...two leaves up and running with lots of room to vine around some sturdy asparagus...the second photo is of a northern tepehuan teosinte plant that is coming along well...some in my yard are bigger but they aren't overshadowed by wheat grass and wheat...that will change this week as what wheat that hasn't bee savaged by the starlings will be coming out and some kholrabi, brussels sprouts, and cow peas will be going in...there may be a significant change of direction for the garden this fall so a ravaged wheat crop doesn't present much of a disaster...especially if i can preseve the stand in my back yard...the nitrogen fixing "green manure" project will continue here but may become redundant on campus if things fall the right way...more on that as autumn approaches...a number of hopi blue maize plants are up...but on ocaxacan green dent...i will be soaking more seeds and trying again as the weather is supposed to warm towards the end of the week and will be suitable for germinating maize...thirty-six proaxes on three plants that produced a total of four last season...the terminal spears are flowering and i hope for viable seed to start a stand here at home...and anywhere else i can...the last photo is of a robust set of chinese yam vines that have reached the end of the trellis...i will be connecting the two trellises and the vines from both pants can meet...lots of aerial bulbs this year and i will definitely have to harvest the yams in the fall...we will need the space.
