saturday morning in the garden

the asparagus harvest is pretty much done and i will let any new spears reach their full size...i put up some supports for the larger ones and mulched the plants with compost...as soon as the squash i inter-planted with the asparagus comes up i'll spread compost across the whole bed to feed the hungry plants...i hilled all the potatoes while i was at it ( third photo )...the winter wheat continues to be savaged by birds...i will still get something of a harvest but after last year's wheat emerged unscathed the severity of the attack comes as a bit of a surprise ( although there is much more wheat in the garden this year and that may have made things more attractive ) it looks like i will be finding some volunteer winter wheat this autumn and that couls present an issue as i think things are in the works for a change of direction in the fall that will limit the "green manure" use on campus and i may be culling wheat...the intermediate wheat grass is going to seed as well...it did so last year and wen completely untouched by birds...the stand has been pretty much the same size for its three seasons so is doesn't present a larger target...we'll see if the birds interest in the domesticate extends to the "wild and weedy ancestor
