autumn crops

the garlic and potatoes that were planted in the community garden early in the spring have finished their season and are slowly being dug...the ones that went in on planting day will be coming to fruition this month and they too will be dug..this is opening up space in the garden that shouldn't lie fallow...i was thinking green manure and cover crops...but hen i began to plant crops for autumn harvest in my yard and in chatting with cynthia ( that's her in the top photo...the only photo of her in the garden i am in possession of despite all the time and effort she has put into the garden since planting day...we need to remedy that parker...) she suggested kale and lettuce...cool...i have multiple beets up and running in the yard and a lot of detroit red seeds still left so we will be planting beets..we have also ordered seeds for sugar snap peas, arugula, and spinach so there will be a continuation of garden production and a fall harvest of cool weather vegetables...then it's off to the races with fall and winter to establish winter vetch, dixie clover ( there is already new zealand white clover out there ) and winter rye...i also find i have organic alfalfa seed and the proper inoculant as well...after harvest we will recharge the soil for next spring...more good stuff to eat and healthy soil? win/win.
