cover crop. green manure, and garlic II

the second bed we cleared had contained maize, beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, and potatoes ( nature doesn't plant a single type of plant in an area in neat little rows...neither do we )...once again we left the still producing tomato plant be...while we were double digging the bed we gleaned quite a few spuds...someone missed a few so we split the haul...this bed was planted with fourteen garlic cloves from a single bulb...so we have better than twenty garlic plants for next season...it was also sown with alfalfa as a green manure...we did not sow any seed in the garlic rows in either bed because the garlic doesn't like competition at all and it will eventually be mulched with straw and fabric for winter which would kill any cover crop...the third bed we cleared was the three sisters' bed...we left the peppers still running and one of fern's pod corn plants the squirrels haven't nailed...this bed was sown with a combination of alfalfa and winter rye without the garlic...finally, before we left, the gardeners posed for yet another shameless selfie...just so you could put a couple of faces to this narrative...there are four more beds to clear but the plants in them are not done...there will be a few more weekends of work and waiting for plants to establish themselves before winter hits...there will be more posts..stay tuned.
