trellis 2012

i drove out to campus after work to check up on things and do a little maintenance....after you get past the obligatory teosinte photo on top ( this will be a season long sort of thing...sorry...can't help it ) you can see that the more developed of the two yams has captured a stalk of winter wheat which it seems to have used for support while finding the trellis...don't really think it's going to harm the wheat much...it will be done soon in nay event...in the third photo you can see why i put the second part of the trellis in...the vine has topped the 1 X 1 and is searching for somewhere to go...so i provided it...this season i'm using jute twine instead of mason's twine...it's significantly cheaper ( there is a budget on this project that i do try to stay inside of...while expenditures are down a bit compared to the first two seasons because the plants are perennials and i am growing a saving a lot of my own seed...all that wheat was seeded from last season's harvest...still these gardens have become my second most costly leisure activity ) and ab it more of a natural fiber...your choice to believe which is the more important factor...the bottom photo is one of the half-dozen red nordalnds up and running ( out of ten )...no sign of wild potatoes or any life form the ones the usda sent...but i planted those later and the warmer weather coming up should see them arriving soon...the potato patch out in my back yard is showing signs of life as well as the turnips, beets, and radishes i seeded a few weeks back....there is movement everywhere and with ( i hope ) the threat of frost past it's time to really begin.
