a day off and up early so...off to the gardens before lawn mowing and whatever else crops up today...it has been a cold spring so far, although there is a distinct warming trend forecast for the coming week which may increas motivation...there is movement however...
i went out to campus first and, as you might expect, the cast of characters i foumnd were the cold hardy ( which was true of everywhere i went actually )...the alfalfa is doing just fine in the cold and rain ( 2.15" in my yard so far this month )...
i counted forty spears of asparagus...
given the size some have reached i would appear to be the only one harvesting any at all...so i took the most reasonably edible ones...
ignorant of the cold the einkorn wheat prospers and i took my weeding hoe to the bed to keep the bureaucrats happy...
then i wandered over to the other garden with little in the way of expectation of movement and i found myself rewarded in that expectation...
a couple of those spuds i planted a few days ago might be working on a leaf or two...or maybe not...
out in the back yard it is a slightly different cast of the cold hardy...strawberries are blooming in the east and south beds...
there is asparagus cohabiting with berries and onions...
ramps...
garlic in the company of daffodils and grape hyacinths...
the rye is robust...
the concord grape vines in the catalpa tree are coming into leaf ( so are the seedless vines )...
and, ominously for the "native growth" trying to establish itself in the south bed, another true native has made its first appearance and this half inch tall plant will grow to a relentless eight or ten feet shading out anything foolish enough to challenge its hegemony...the lemon balm will meet its match by august.
