september first

it had rained some overnight so i felt relieved of the obligation to water when i arrived at the campus garden this morning...
things, in general, are fine...one of the specifics that is bothering me is the lack of asparagus "berries" this season...i have seed from last year saved...was looking for more...however it seems that that will have to wait until next autumn...
things seem fairly good in my bed...
the pepper plant continues to pepper along and the tomato has produced a very late season fruit...
the alfalfa had me worried a bit earlier in the year...it has recovered though and is looking more than robust enough to overwinter...
the east side of the maize row is doing okay and the two larger plants have both come out in ears...
and as an index of the relentless tenacity of dna, at least one of the broken plants on the west side is determined to try...
over on the south end the zea mays meaxicana has some exposed seed still hanging on and has developed more ears than its descendants...seed is beginning to become visible and i am hopeful of a harvest of viable seed before long...
finally, while we have seed, propagation, and relentless dna on our minds, the carolina horse nettle continues to bloom across the garden...
and those blooms of the past have created an impressive number of fruits around the beds...i counted forty-six on one alone...they procreate rhizomatically as well...a dual reproductive threat...my surmise is they have no plans to leave the garden...aliens at home.
