the rest of the garden

the rest of the garden is doing well...the cucumbers, blue lake bush beans, and the buttercrunch lettuce share abed and seem to be cohabiting well...there are two new asparagus spears up bringing the total to forty-two spears...they are at home there and thriving...harvest ready in a couple more years...the orange lunchbox pepper continues to produce...why they are call 'ORANGE' escapes me at the moment...perhaps when they ripen...half a dozen beefsteak tomatoes are on the vine...no sign of romas yet although there are many blooms on that plant..eventually...the winter rye is almost done...there is still a bit of green in places so i will wait...however sometime this week i will probably bring it in for the "bread from scratch" project ( it's coming along Jean! ) there's still a lot to do in the garden...we'll finish up in novenber...more as it comes up.

at the community garden

took a trip out to campus after work to turn some beds and water some plants and found a few things along the way...the lettuce is looking better than it did last trip out which is encouraging and there are six cucumber plants up and running...four in one hill, two in the other...both varieties are represented...i may not know much but i know zea when i see ti and the third photo is definitely bear paw maize popping up..i an defying the squirrels..i imagine they will not care about human defiance and will eat the maize anyway...the orange lunchbox pepper is looking robust and preparing to bloom...and so are any number of beds in the garden...we are started..there is much more to do and soon if there is to be a season...let's go.

backyard planting

after i finished on campus i came home to do a bit more work...the top photo is the bed that held the second year ramps until the trees were cut down and the direct sun began to fry them...they have been moved ( and do not seem overly happy in their new location either..lamentable but true...we will see what happens...if you cannot accept loss you shouldn't be doing this )...some shovel and hoe work plus 320# of compost turned it into a bed that had two cucumber hills ( sumter and spacemaster growing from seed ) and room for ( in order 0boston pickling cucumber, sweet banana, sweet cherry tomato, hot banana pepper, yellow bell pepper, and roma tomato...the last photo is of the finished bed including three buttercrunch lettuce plants i do not seem to have photographed on the way in...see today's post on the community garden if you need a graphic of that...there are more peppers on the way and there will be a spud planting for later harvest...and the "bread from scratch" project still has Jean and i busy...we are nothing if not in motion.
