winterizing

went out to the campus garden today to do some work on my bed there in preparation for winter...
the tomato plant has seen better days and since there is a hard frost in the forecast for tonight i decided the time had come to remove it...there were still some small green fruits on it...
a small handful that went into a paper bag when i got home...
the wheat i planted last month is still a failed crop...
which is a bit confusing since its contemporaries i planted in my back yard are doing just fine...i have no idea what could be the cause...
so after i pulled out the tomato...
i hoed over the bed to loosen the soil...
working around the few islands of dilapidated wheat that remained...
and broadcast and raked in more wheat seed...i do not have high expectations of this...it is late and the wheat on campus should be as far along as the wheat in my yard...unless the climate change driven weather cooperates this crop will fail as well...i thought it worth a try however...
more happily i found an earthworm while rooting about in the bed...always pleased to see them...
the asparagus is still looking robust..i did not find any blooms this morning...
i did find a very late season new spear however...perennials are relentless...if the speed of their colonization varies, the y all have the same goal.
