a mixture of results

sunday is my day on the community garden watering schedule and, for the first time this season, i felt compelled to douse the beds...i did mine somewhat selectively for reasons we will dig into soon...
i suspected the asparagus would be fine...and it is...somewhat surprisingly, given the recent warmth, it has tossed out a newish spear...was not expecting more until say september...the garden surprises...or the asparagus anyway...
over in my bed things are unnaturally orderly if not altogether in good order...
the alfalfa is still deeply displeased about all the rain this year...and so was spared any water from the hose...
the good news is that, much like as when the post-transplant shock receded, i find new growth on both...
the alfalfa in my yard is something less than chipper as well...my yard has had some issues lately...and we will be getting to that soon...
the spuds are fine...at least one is showing signs of finishing up and one is still blooming...
still no sign of fruits..which is disappointing but not surprising...a delicate set of vauiables there which obviously have not been met...
the carolina horse nettle is still blooming away...
there has been weeding going on...however there are still dozens of plants in the beds and in the garden lawn...given the seed and rhizome combination of reproduction for this deep rooted perennial it will be a denizen of the garden into the future...short of herbicide it will not go and even then it is iffy...
the maize is beginning to look d0ownright corny...
and here's some family portraiture...zea mays mexicana ( the ancestor ) on the left and zea mays mays ( descendant ) on the right...suitable for framing...
unfortunately birds have found the leaf cuter bee cocoons in my bee house...i was forced to rip open the critter net i have over the house because a bird ( unidentified ) was trapped in it this morning...i was displeased but not willing to have a dead bird on my hands...
after the recommended "month at room temperature" and another month outdoors in temperatures that should have had them hatched by now the cocoons are inert...best surmise is the bird was scavenging dead bees...i have fired off a critical email to the supplier and ordered more cocoons from a direct competitor i have used in the past...lesson would seem to be stick with a trusted supplier, no? the up side is i actually saw a leaf cutter in the garden this morning...she would not cooperate over a portrait which is unfortunate...however it was nice to see her anyway...wishing her all the best...hopefully she will have kin in my yard yet this summer.
