thursday

thursday is my day to water at the campus garden...it had been raining off and on on the drive over and the sky looked like more, in addition to what we have already received this week...
when i checked a couple of beds i found mosit soil from the surface down to arounf six inches deep, and that along with the overcast sky and cool temperatures obviated the need to water...
the uprooted and replanted teosinte has seemingly overcome the shock and, while a bit ragged around some edges, is working on growing again rather than just surviving...we will see how this develops...
i had not expected the alfalfa to stay inside boundaries...it has not...these things happen...
unlike the spuds in the portage garden the ones here have not erupted in blooms...they are indicating a willingness however and there may be blossoms before long...
meanwhile their cousins the horse nettle continue to bloom across the garden...since they put all their reproductive energies into fruits and rhizomes rather than tubers the relentless blooming is a normal function...
the asparagus continues to produce new spears..albeit on at a time...still...enjoying a summer cool spell much like the spuds...
unlike my back yard, i see no sign of "berries" on the plants...however there is a new round of flowers coming along so there is still some hope
the cow peas are beginning to vine vigorously...
this one seems to be reaching for the twine i attached to the takes to keep the aspragus upright...so, rather than build an elaborate trellis...
i simply strung a few more strands of twine around the sapragus that i can "train" the vines to use...they will resist since they want to grow vertically instead of horizontally...a battle of wills will ensue...my best bet is they will mostly win unless i start to make daily runs to the garden...this seems unlikely so we will strive for compromise...mostly in their favor as they move towards the next higher strand of twine and into the asparagus.
