spuds

spuds...so i will start the post with einkorn wheat because it is 10000 year old dna and still around in my back yard and i am good with that...on to the spuds...

the first of the back yard container spuds finished up and produced enough for a fair lunch...no world's record i am sure, however, not bad for a five gallon bucket, some soil, and a couple of months in the sun...as i wandered around out there...

i looked in on the conatainer with the four four corners tubes plante in it and...unexpected growth has occured...so i covered the exposed tuber in some soil and went downstairs...

where i discovered three quarters of those still in the package chitting away...

so i put some garden soil in an appropriately themed pot...

and gave the two most advanced ones a home...

the other two...

went itno a run of the mill pot...everyone got some water and they were put out in the spud container row outside one of the maize/teosinte beds...more as they develop...or don't...they have been inert so long...we will see how it goes

spuds 2017 III

planting spuds at the community garden was pretty much the same story as the back yard...four yukon golds,,,four red pontiacs..and one all blue...all unsprouted...they will be along in a few weeks...the asparagus count is up to twenty=one...including one just breaking the surface...all looking robust and very purple.

spuds like the early blue and yukon gold in the top two photos have been blooming ( and, while i am prepared to be disappointed in this, i am greedy fro potato fruits ) for some time now...envious perhaps, the asparagus in the third photo has joined in and has produced the small, bell-like flowers that asparagus do ( fourth and fifth photos )...i would be deeply gratified to have another generation of seed from a plant dragged out of the back of my truck...we'll see...the bottom photo is a view looking west down some of the beds.

planting day preperation: potatoes

there are already spuds in the community garden that ellen and i planted in april...ollala and german butterball along with some russets...juice valley, leona, pungo, purple valley and craigs snowwhite were planted ealier this month along with a few early blue and some roja narino..toss in the mashua and jerusalem artichokes and it is already tuber city...tomorrow is the "official" planting day and what would planting day be without potatoes?...compact bundles of vitamins, minerals, and carbohydrates they are nutritious and many find them irresistible ( like me )...so this evening i took some all red and german butterballs and cut them let them callous until tomorrow afternoon when they will be available for anyone who cares to plant them...i have some "drops" of yukon gold and early blue as well so there will be variety and that's what we aim for...a community of plants maintained by a community of people...it all starts at 4:30 tomorrow afternoon.
