just a hint...

it is saturday morning and so i went out to the campus garden to have a look...it has been raining here off and on for a few days and i found there was ample moisture in the beds...both from the precipitation and from this morning's heavy dew ( which left my sneakers sodden by the end of the trip )...
the asparagus is green and healthy and around the back side of the bed things are moving along...
both maize plants there are producing ears ( more on ears in a few moments )...
there are many ripening cherry tomatoes...
and a bean and a squash vine have called on the asparagus for support...
down the row, i believe the maize has topped out its vertical growth and is concentrating on ears...
some are nearing maturity ( with my hand as scale )
some are just getting started...
some have produced a single ear ( so far )...
this one three ( so far )...the maize is turning out to be a diverse group in productive terms...i count twenty-two ears to date...
and i am ( finally ) finding signs of blossoms on the bean vines in the maize...
strolling around the rest of the garden i found pollinators at work...
pickling cucumbers left on the vine entirely too long...
tendrils searching for a trellis...
and some fine specimens of carolina horse nettle...
something else caught my attention as i walked down the row of beds...it stood out most in the cucumber vines and the cornstalks...august fourth marked the mid-point of summer...today is the eleventh...moving towards mid-month and the latter half of summer...there are unmistakable signs of autumn in the garden this morning...there is till ripening and harvest left to do...that won't last forever...soon enough i will be putting the asparagus to bed for the winter...three months or so...that seems to call for a calendar as a timing method...wagering the passage is faster than that.
