seeds...

...and one photo of wild potatoes...those won't be ending soon...anyway...the top photo is of this evening's haul of teosinte seeds from the indoor plants..more ears are opening( second and third photos ) and are preparing to shatter...i am collecting them as they drop into the pots or onto the floor and will be test germinating some soon ( a new year project i think )...more seeds arrived in today's mail..alfalfa and winter rye for fall cover crops ( and green manures...both fix nitrogen...win/win ) at home and in the community garden...the dakota black popcorn and the quinoa are for wherever i find space...i'd like to see both in the community garden if i can find the room...i have wanted to try growing quinoa since i read about it in "the lost crops of the incas"...a trendy crop picked up on by foodies seemingly, i came to it through anthropology...not celebrity chef..the bottom photo is of two wild potato plants germinated form the argintinian accession...i am still utterly geeked by them...it is a hazard of gardening to be enamored of odd plants...i have planted rosin weed and illinois bundleflower all in the name of planting natives...( and monitoring climate change..and [again!] fixing nitrogen...i am stunned by the number of plants you can use to augment rather than deplete soil fertility...nature seems so much wiser than humans...but that's another post ) so why not some exotic foreigners? next season promises to be a busy one and i just keep making it busier...good thing i am geeked i suppose...more as all this stuff comes to fruition.
