smaller potatoes and some grainy photos
on a bit of a vacation here so there are a few projects that are garden related i will be paying some attention to...beyond the replant of the potatoes there is a new critter net for the strawberries i want to assemble and i am still working on wild potatoes ( top two photos )..they are coming along and all have multiple leaves..a couple of the plants are getting a bit "leggy" so i while i have still been bringing them up into natural light during the day i have also cut back the time they spend under the grow light in an effort to slow their vertical growth and foster some roots ( and, i hope, some tubers )...the kinua ( third through fifth photos ) i planted mostly so i would be able to identify seedlings in community the garden next spring...but i am not going to toss perfectly good plants...even if the end height can be around six feet...it will be an education growing them indoors and so far they seem fine...true leaves have developed and there is new stem growth on many of the plants obviously there will need to be a thinning soon...save what i can...there are several approaches to quinoa growing and i believe we will try both...broadcasting seed and raking it in produces lots of plants but makes weeding difficult ( try weeding broadcast wheat sometime...you will see what i mean when we look at the winter wheat in the community garden next spring )...another spaces the plants out in rows about a foot apart which produces branching plants with multiple seed heads...the problem here is that the seed heads mature at different times making harvesting a matter of close ( and ,i suppose, daily )observation about three months into their season...a final method spaces the plants three to four inches apart in rows twenty-four inches apart...this is supposed to produce non-branching plants with a single, larger seed head that obviously eliminates the problem of sequential maturity...we will see which works better...as for the plants i have already started i am content to let them go...something to keep me puttering around the basement until spring...i see a busy blog week ahead...tune in if you like.
