unsettled

for as warm as parts of april and early may were things seem to have inverted...it is struggleing to get into the upper fifties ( fahrenheit ) and lows have dropped into the thiries and i have some concerns...
admittedly i have never tried to grow a mooseberry bush and have no real emperical idea of what to expect...however the fact that it looks like a dead stick stuck in the ground disturbs me...hoping frostbite falls still will pay a visit...
ramps are in evidence but not having a stellar season...none seem like they are remotely close to flowering which is diappointing...we will persevere, however one wonders what the cause might be...this is new behavior...
while i am inclined to call the winter wheat a dead loss, the winter rye is looking robust ( too bad i planted less of it to allow a larger wheat crop ) and ears are beginning to emerge...on schedule for harvest later in summer...
the new york imports are blooming away and there will be berries come june...
and the grapes on the trellis and in the catalpa and fir trees are leafing out nicely...a sign of possible grapes in the late summer and early autumn...
and no one need lose sleep over the jerusalem artichokes...they are filling in and will have a season whether you like it or not...it's not all gloom despite the concerns...and towards the end of the month there will be more going in ...squash...maize...beans...spuds..the ever-present teosinte...and, i'm thinking, some millet for willow the parakeet...more as it comes up.
