zea mexicana and grapes

the day started with seeds...when i froze the bulk of last season's tesointe seed harvest i left some out for this year...going by the kathy rule ( "the darker the seed the more germplasm" ) i separated some of the darker seeds...
and i kept the seed from the first ears i harvested in 2020...the last frost is pased and it is time to get started so...
i got out the hydrogen peroxide to give the seeds a twenty minute soak to break dormancy...
per the kathy rule the dark seeds all sank to the botom of the container to soak...
while only seven of the lighter colored "first" seeds did...
while the seeds were soaking i soaked some unbleached paper towels in distilled water and when the seeds were done they went into the towels and then into a couple of baggies to sit in a dark place and cook a bit...we will be checking in in a week or so to see who is doing what in there...one hopes for a fair germination rate since i have three places to plant them this season...we will see...
finished with that i decided to try a teosinte experiment...i prepared a bed...
and direct sowed a handful of the dark seed...not something i have done much before...i have left seed in ears outside to shatter just to see if it would appear the following year with no success to date...i will keep the plot well watered and we will ( again ) see what happens ( if anything besides encroachment by creeping charlie )...
the concord grape vines in the fir trees are about five feet to the east of where i planted the teosinte and so i had a look over there and it seems there will be concord grapes in the fir trees this year...a pleasing prospect...and a decorated fir tree come september...
equidistant to the west is the trellis for the seedless red grapes i planted in 2016 and ( finally! ) they have given clear signs that they intend to produce...another pleasant prospect...
i dresed them with compost as ( hopefully ) a production boost...will be doing the same for the concords...now if only the mooseberry bush would stop looking like a dead stick the south side of the house would be in full season
