true leaves and teosinte silk

a couple of noteworthy events out in the back yard...the alfalfa plant in the top photo has developed its first true leaf as have quite a number out in the alfalfa patch ( second photo ) i am using as one of the green manures in my yard this fall ( there will be some going into the community garden...probably tomorrow )...they are coming along and need only develop two more true leaves to be hardy enough to overwinter...once those develop there will be a sprinkling of winter rye added...on the zea family front, the northern tepehuan teosinte plants have been flowering for several weeks ( third photo ) and now there are tell-tale signs of reproduction...i have sighted silks ( fourth and fifth photo ) on one plant and i have been energetically cross pollinating all the flowering plants in the yard in an effort to produce ears...at least one is on the way and that is good...with any luck more will follow...the largest plant is producing a second bloom ( more on that later in the weekend ) but the season is getting late...i am still hopeful however..they are pretty tough in this climate for a sub-tropical grass...off to the community garden tomorrow for some work on that season end...more as it comes up.
