progress

some of the sprouting winter wheat has oriented itself...roots down sprouts up and feeding on the germ...
a lot of it hasn't however...so i helped them along by spreading a thin layer of compost over the bed and giving it a shot of water from the hose...don't want the roots to dry out...
the rye seems to have had no such orientation issues...i could not find an exposed root in the bed...
and there is a lot of it up...there's quite a bit of wheat going as well...considering that this is only day four i am pleased with the progress these crops ( if you can call thirty-two square feet a "crop"...then again, if it produces grain, what else is it? ) are making...this is only the beginning...any number of variables need to come into line for this to succeed...the weather chief among them and the one the gardener has the least ( read no ) control over...it will be interesting to see how it fares ( for me anyway )...more when the first leaves appear.
