labor day at the iuncg
plants don't take holidays..i do...but then i find plants relaxing because they tend to focus my attention away from some petty details of life, so i spent part of the early morning on campus tending to some details...one of which was having a look at the community garden...on the whole it seems fine...true there are suckers growing out of th e base of the cherry tree ( and everything i have read says they need to be removed because they will siphon energy away from new growth on the branches where it needs to be )...but that's a fairly minor detail...the eggplants continue to fight back against predators and produce new fruit (?) and the peppers and tomatoes are ripening away...the whole garden stayed on schedule for the season and i cannot see why it would not continue to produce as long as the weather holds...i was using it as a control to compare the behavior of the annuals with the perennials across campus...i haven't found any answers there because the plants did what they were supposed to...but i did enjoy helping with the planting and visiting the garden nearly as often as the pgp..a community garden is a great idea for both creating a local support system ( the community part ) and for helping, even just a little bit, with localizing food security...i cannot say enough good things about it or the people involved ( even though i must admit to not knowing them all that well their intentions show through and they are positive )...you really should visit it sometime.
