late summer in the pgp

once again the garden reminds me that the season ends on its terms and no-one ( or nothing ) else's...when the last of the gamagrass proaxes put out a terminal spear last month i was fairly well sure that the reproductive season was done...no...three more terminal spears have appeared and flowered growing from the same proaxe...a hardy perennial grass, it will be difficult to do in...the asparagus "berries" look a bit like christmas in september...they are ripening and i have to wonder if they will actually expand the asparagus bed...they produced quite s few last season with no discernible multiplication of plants...but that doesn't mean this batch won't...the cowpeas are a deep green ( third photo ) and, hopefully, fixing lots of nitrogen with the help of the rhizobia...the forth photo is of a robust northern tepehuan teosinte plant and a book on the history of ginseng root that the coach gave me ( thanks mik! she also pointed out that future landscapers would be cursing me for burdening them with an orgainically volatile patch of stubbornly invasive perennials when my day on campus is done...well...we all aspire to leave our mark )...finally the autumn crop of brussels sprouts is gaining verticality and, one hopes, will begin budding "martian heads" soon...not over by a long chalk we will be in the garden until november at least...and then we'll just think about next season til march...still geeked.
