knee high by july

well...the hopi blue in the pgp is...in both of the first two photos...so is the sweet corn in the community garden...coing along nicely and ready to tempt the squirrels which will be the ultimate victors in this eating contest...they will be spending way more time in the garden than any of us and they know what they like...a sad fact of gardening life is that the fauna sees it as an opportunity to use human intervention as a meal ticket...even with daisy the cat on patrol the squirrels will devour the corn in my back yard...there is no stopping it...a bit of a bummer but we have to take our satisfactions where we can and i still feel validated by growing things...perhaps a sign of age...or just a realization of being embedded in larger cycles...either way we all take away something...hopefully give as well....the "wild and weedy" corn ancestor teosinte is almost as large as its descendants and you can see the family resemblance in them...as a short side note, the asparagus in the pgp has begun to produce "berries" after flowering so we have the seed for the asparagus bed planned for the autumn...you can usually find something positive in the garden.

  1. ahhh, if only you had a dog like my Zoe who simply will not tolerate squirrels in her yard (so they must cross on the electrical wires overhead)

  2. i have a cat that eviscerates them whenever possible ( they are rodents after all ) but even she can't cover all bases and she has to sleep sometime...squirrels are opportunistic.
