out back in early july

the zucchini has begun to flower ( top photo ) and will soon begin its inexorable squash production that may bury us all in loaves of zucchini bread...i am not jesting...it has never been a favorite and i was over ruled in my objections to having it anywhere near this yard...i had hoped that the jerusalem artichokes in the bed behind the hopi blue maize ( bottom photo ) would overrun and strangle it...but the sunchokes have been busy vanquishing the lemon balm and now seem to be engaged in mortal combat with the feral rose bush..plant warfare evolves slowly but hat does not diminish the brutality...so we are doomed to endless bread pans filled with that mid-western delicacy..on a happier note the cucumbers have begun to vine and one has found support on a red nordland...this may be unwise as their season is closing in on its finish and the support is temporary...there will be a trellis provided...the largest of the northern tepehuan teosinte plants is over three feet tall and beginning to branch...the potted teosinte is doing well and i will be saving some pollen from the larger plants just in case they do flower under the light this coming autumn...the last stop is the asparagus transplanted from the bed of my truck last week...they all seem fine and are still green and upright...now to find them a home...
