a second shot at indoor "wild" plants

autumn is definitely arrived and temperatures are supposed to dip dip down into frost territory some nights this coming week so once again it is time to bring "wild" plants indoors under the lights in an effort to 1) see if there is any possibility of bringing teosinte seeds to maturity...and...2)trying to get the yema de huevos potatoes through the winter and back outside next spring...bitter experience has taught me that i will be bringing in all sorts of stuff with the plants, chief among them aphids who will be more than happy to multiply into overshoot proportions and kill the plants they feed on...i have been prohibited from turning lady bugs loose in the basement so a "natural" ( in this case read biodegradable ) insecticide/repellant is a gilt edged necessity...i was planning on brewing up a nicotine killer with tap water and old cigars to get on top of the aphid problem before i brought the plants in...but...nicotine is toxic to members of the nightshade family and to potatoes...so no nicotine on the yema de huevos ( or your starter tomatoes later in the winter either )...research tells me that murphy's oil soap won't harm the potatoes but will cream the aphids to perdition so i went out and bought some and a couple of quart spray bottles ( the second one will be rank with nicotine to spray on the teosinte which doesn't mind it a bit )...dumped three capfulls of soap into the bottle and added water...the plants come in tomorrow...the spray goes on today while they are still outside...there will be more on this as the project continues...stay tuned if you're up for it.
