october rain

a front came through last night bringing cooler temperatures and, what was at times, significant rainfall with it...so there was a markedly more octoberish ambiance to the garden this morning...i went to campus with the intention of trying to obtain some better shots of the rye in the green manure bed...i was only marginally successful ( top two photos )...some of the green manures are deeply involved in their reproductive cycles...the yellow peas continue to produce pods, the rye is flowering and going to seed, and the hairy vetch is flowering...we may be using their propensity to set and store nitrogen for the benefit of the garden but they have their own agenda...as i strolled around the garden i found more evidence that squirrels will eat cucumbers...i did not see any critters this morning so perhaps this is what remains of a rained out dinner...the winter wheat is filling in very well and like the wheat in my yard it has begun to tiller...a fair sign that things are good...the last photo is of a somewhat soggy south side of the garden this morning...whatever perspective i take i see autumn.
