october evening

after oi finished planting i wandered around a bit...the broccoli seed pods aren't mature yet and neither are the yellow pea pods...so seed saving will still have to wait a bit...fine...we have time...the hairy vetch in the third photo has wrapped its tendrils around a rye plant to pull itself clear of the mass of vegetation that the green manures have become...i offered this bed to the chief of th e un police last tuesday in exchange for the bed that i have just planted with jerusalem artichokes and garlic ( only fair since it was their bed this past season )...it should be well charged with nitrogen and they will be adding oodles of organic matter when they turn all that under before planting...a well prepared bed is the secret and this one should be just fine...the strawberries are clearly headed for dormancy but the geraniums are still watching over them as they have all season...last photo is the west side of the garden about an hour ago.
