teosinte seeds on the hoof II
last year was a disappointment teosintewise ( at least the annual variety ) in that i had little luck germinating seeds and the plants that did grow produced no ears at all...so this fall marks the first time since 2011 that there have been examples of the teosinte/maize morphology out there and it is a comparative bumper crop...sixty plus ears on five plants, including the potted on i have earmarked for an attempt at producing mature seeds indoors...seeds are in evidences even though they are immature and green as could be...the morphological similarity to maize ears couldn't be plainer and the gardener is geeked...there are more plants on campus ( all this is going on in my backyard ) and if the weather holds there may be more coming along than the two i found on the plant in the perennial garden...ancestor/domesticate morphology is going to be part of the teaching program in the community garden next season..here's hoping lessons learned in the back yard this season serve the lesson plan well next year...the lessons? over plant/thin as needed ( but not too much )/nurture every way possible...this isn't coen.

Dear Fred,
ReplyDeleteThese are amazing and beautiful images of teosinte. I would like to ask your permission to use one in a book I'm writing about the archaeology of maize. Please contact me when you have time...I'd like to give you the details.
Best,
Michael
Providing photos of teosinte ears shouldn't be an issue. I had good results in 2011 and 2013 and have multiple images, both outdoor and indoor. So far 2014 has had limited success, however there are ears forming as well as newly flowering plants. That said, success seems bi-annual.
ReplyDeleteDear Fred, I would also like to use your images for a children's trail in a New Zealand Botanic Garden. Can I please use the first one?
ReplyDeleteRegards,
Amy
