winter rye is winnowed
two ounces of winter rye seed planted late in the summer of 2013 resulted in the stand of rye in the top photo ( from june when there was an unnamed creek on the south side of my house )...i threshed the last of the harvest last night...that's it in a bowl in the second photo before winnowing...the third photo is the same rye after i went out back and got chaff and awns all over the yard and myself...two ounces of seed yielded a bit over half a pound of seed for the next generation...i quadrupled the investment from last year without too much effort and only a few awns left stuck in my fingers...we have ample cover crop seed for our purposes...a bit more local this year.
