leaners

after i finished at one community garden i drove to another because it is my day to water and it is supposed to be sunny and warm today and a little water wouldn't hurt any of the plants...
the alfalfa in my bed is so robust it may be in need of some control...i have caged it before and it looks as if we are headed in that direction again...
the spuds are doing their best to escape alfalfa shade so i will help them along...in the fourth photo you can catch a glimpse of one of the tesosinte plants i put in last visit ( near bottom left )...one of the four has failed...which is not unusual...hope the other three thrive...
one spud is preparing to flower..so is its cousin the horse nettle...the horse nettle will bear fruits...the spud doing so is much more uncertain...it would need to be a coolish and wet summer for them to co-operate and that may be asking a bit much...
the ten thousand year old dna in the einkorn wheat is cooking along...these will be shorter plants with smaller ears than say winter wheat...much older variety and not nearly as "improved"...a lot more like its "wild and weedy" ancestor with thinner rachis, thick husks, and an inclination to shatter...we will see what we get...
the asparagus is flowering away...
it has also acquired a decided lean...nothing unusual in that in my experience either...
unfotunately it is leaning towards the cow peas and will be throwing shade which is impolite cohabitation at best...
they are aggressive plants and, when mature, would ignore the shade...at the moment though they are just getting started and need the light...so...
after i watered...
i drove an old tomato stake i found in the bed of my truck into the midst of the asparagus...
and reined in the worst of the miscreants with twine if ound behind the seat in the cab ( you'd think i had run into the sorts of issues before )...the likelihood of that lone tomato stake holding the asparagus is an iffy proposition...especialy if it gets windy...so i will be back with more stakes of bamboos or whatever to reinforce the sunlight rationing soon enough.
