laboring in the garden

i went out to the garden this morning to do some maintenance...there is one lonely yukon gold plant left to be dug ( top photo...along with a stray spud someone missed which turned up as i was hoeing and will part of my lunch ) and then i will be planting the center of that bed in green manures...i am not sure about what to do with the cornstalks after the ears are done...leave them in as autumn decorations until thanksgiving or so? or chop them up for compost? i will ask around the community...the cucumber wall is still producing very well despite the fall-like foliage...take them while you can, this won't go on forever ( but i believe there will be a reprise next season with more verticality )...there is still sweet corn to be had but it should be picked soon or it will surely be past its corn-on-the-cob prime ( if it isn't already )...we still have oodles of strawberries and blooms...a sort of surprise but the daughters are working overtime...there is a lot to come yet...most of it maintenance work since production will be slowing over the next month...there will be fall planting for next season though...gardening doesn't end...it just takes a break...more as it comes up.
