seeds

the green manure project is well under way and i have already begun to plant winter wheat in the community garden and my back yard as a cover crop...seeds are beginning to come in and that will continue for some time...today i received texas wild cherry tomato and detroit red beet, as well as heirloom golden bantam sweet corn and apache red flour corn seeds...i will be saving hopi blue seeds form this years harvest for next season planting and the asparagus "berries" are ripening and will be ready to "naturalize" soon...on top of that the jerusalem artichoke harvest will begin in earnest next month and there will be an abundance of seed tubers to replenish old beds and begin new ones where feasible...this season is a ways from over and there is still produce to come and considerable work to do before the gardens go to bed for the winter ( even then there is every possibility that the winter wheat, winter rye, and wheat grass could photosynthesize all winter...i was harvesting [admittedly small]brussels sprouts last december...things may never completely shut down )...but it isn't too early to start thinking seriously about next season..the lack of any sort of bean in the gardens this year, for instance, was just a lack of complete pre-planning ( what is an american garden with out beans?)...almost an inexcusable oversight..but the cucumber wall will have company next year as some pole beans balance out the bed's verticality...if we're careful next season could be really cool.
