there is photosynthesis everywhere you look out there... the chinese yam on the west end of the jerusalem artichoke bed ( top photo ) has a choke hold on the rose bush...i'm thinking there isn't much of anything that's going to try to persuade it to let go... and i am wondering how i am going to control the aerial bulbs it will deposit around the bush without being shredded next spring...a challenge...the hopi blue maize on the east end of the sunchoke bed ( second photo ) is doing well...the one on the right is over a foot tall and the one on the left tops out at around ten inches...the maize has a lot of relatives around the yard and the northern tepehuan teosinte ( third photo ) is just about a foot tall as well...i have around thirty plants of various sizes out there and i am hoping for seed ears if not mature seeds ( although there are some potted ones set aside for another indoor teosinte/grow light experiment when the autumn weather turns frosty )...the turnips are getting serious and a few have already found their way into salads...fresh picked, tender and juicy...a world apart from the produce section at strack's...the yeme de huevos potatoes continue to fill the half barrel and produce colorful blooms...still hoping for tubers and seeds...it's early days in the season and a lot could go on in the next few months...stay tuned, no telling where we'll end up.
