things seem pretty normal...

...but then again it's me writing the commentary...coming to terms with losses is a normal part of gardening ( for something this much fun it can be serious business ) and the trampled beets ( who knows what? ) in the top photo may recover...the stems aren't crushed...just bent over so we may see red yet...the hopi blue maize in the second photo is coming along well...it's really in a bit too shady a spot and it may take a bit longer to develop than it would in full sun but i suspect the squirrels will have blue corn yet this season..another red nordland is flowering...there will be potatoes soon...i am a big fan of tubers and these along with jerusalem artichokes are a couple of my favorites...i hesitate to introduce jerusalem artichokes into this garden...thy are aggressive colonizers ( even more so than the strawberries ) and are difficult to control..as one look at my backyard would attest...the cucumber plant in the fourth photo seems ( finally ) to be getting into gear and considering doing some growing which is pleasing to this gardener anyway...finally the bottom photo is not an alien craft...it is kohlrabi well on its way to being ready to harvest...a cabbage relative i believe although i can't really describe the taste as similar...we are doing fine by any standards and we do attract attention...bob was waiting to pick up his wife this evening and he wandered over and engaged in conversation as i w as weeding and taking photographs...his wife works at iun and he said she had told him about the garden and he was pleased to see it himself...he seemed taken with the idea and was toying with the idea of establishing a community garden on the grounds of his church...it's nice to have a positive impact...good luck to bob and his garden.
