strawberry maintenance
while i was at the garden i peeled back the bird net over the strawberry bed to do a few things...first there was a nascent maple tree that had to go...and i harvested a turnip that was shading one of the stolons that will become a daughter plant...the same plant that produced a runner into thin air outside the bed last week put out another...i really want this plant to concentrate on producing plants inside the bed so i snipped it off ( but if it puts out another one i think i will break down and train it into a pot and when it is firmly rooted snip the stolon and find it a home...i don't have the heart to keep interfering indefinitely )...i loosened the soil under the leaves at the end of the runners and gently pinned them down with some some wye shaped twigs to give them a hint that this is where they should root...both are about dead center in the bed ( which is why we planted the plants along the edges ) and if it all works correctly we will have eighteen plants at season's end instead of twelve...with ( hopefully ) the appropriate increase in berries...more as it comes up.
