tubers

always nutritious and, for me at least, flavorful, tubers are the mainstay of the early garden...nine jerusalem artichokes are up ...and i believe that is the total population that was planted..if the season is even moderately good we should expect hundreds of the irregularly shaped rhizomes between august and october...they radiate out from the base of the parent plant in all directions...(in the pgp they were as far as five feet away and had [and have] colonized the university lawn...since we have not installed any rhizome barriers in the garden we will be culling rouges in spring 2015 as they pop up all around the beds ) and it will be impossible to find them all come harvest time...they are native and highly invasive...vigilance will be a necessity to keep the colony under control...they are on home turf and understand the geography at least as well as we do.
